Science Based Targets Initiative - Reporting

The Leathersellers’ net-zero targets are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an organisation providing certification of clearly defined pathways to reduce carbon emissions and limit global warming.

Reporting requirements can be found on this page. Our participation can be verified here

“Our commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative speaks to the importance of our roles as stewards. From our membership to our historical and cultural assets there is an expectation that we must pass on a better organisation – an ambition we have endeavoured to achieve from our home in the City of London for 600 years. Our net-zero targets recognise that environmental security is a significant factor in the accomplishment of our long-term objectives and helps us plan, sustainably, for the future.”

Summary analysis

Since becoming the first livery company to have net-zero targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2024, we have continued with measures to reduce our carbon emissions by 42% by 2030.

Our annual audit, one of the requirements of SBTi certification, showed that our Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (electricity consumption, renewable, and non-renewable energy) emissions have reduced by 15% since the 2023 baseline. This is principally due to reduced refrigerant top-up and increased use of renewable electricity. During 2025, 33 Great St Helen’s and 3 St Helen’s Place switched to 100% renewable electricity tariffs and street lighting was upgraded to LEDs powered by renewable electricity.

Supply of electricity to 5-7 St Helen’s place, while four times less carbon intensive than the UK grid average, has room to bring significant benefit when the current contract expires in 2027. Considering other progress that has been made, switching to a 100% renewable supplier for these buildings would be sufficient to achieve our SME SBTi target.

Last year we reported that the Leathersellers’ Company joined The Leathersellers’ Foundation in moving investments to fund managers with a specific ESG mandate. This has resulted in a 35% reduction in carbon emissions. While wider scope 3 emissions, comprising non-directly managed properties, were not included this year, we hope to include them in future audits.
