The Leathersellers adopt Britannia Royal Naval College as a new affiliation
- Britannia Royal Naval College trains the next generation of naval officers, attracting cadets from the UK, partner nations, and across the world.
- Responding to evolving societal needs, the Leathersellers have supported the armed forces for centuries.
- Modern affiliations recognise the critical function of defence and the obligation, for organisations that can, to contribute through long-term partnerships.
The Leathersellers have adopted Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) as a new military affiliation. Based in Dartmouth since 1905, BRNC trains and educates officers to lead the service in a complex world.
Cadets come from all over the UK, as well as partner nations, comprising the 460 officers that are trained annually.
As well as recognising the critical function of the armed forces, the affiliation brings together shared objectives centred on helping people fulfil their potential, setting examples of leadership, and building social, national, and institutional resilience.
The Leathersellers primarily offer support through grant funding, along with hospitality and wider engagement, helping BRNC achieve their mission to develop courageous leaders with the spirit to fight and win.
The Leathersellers recently contributed to BRNC’s latest book, commissioned to mark the 120th Anniversary of the college and when the Lord High Admiral’s Divisions was attended by His Majesty King Charles the Third.
Martin Dove, Master (Chair) of the Leathersellers said:
“Britannia Royal Naval College is responsible for training the next generation of officers and instilling the values that define leadership, helping to build national resilience against a complex global outlook. Core to the work of the Leathersellers is long-term stewardship and building resilient futures so that the individuals, institutions and communities we support can continue to rely on us and be better prepared to confront challenges and mitigate risk and uncertainty. In this way, and through our programmes, we aim to bring opportunity, helping people to thrive and achieve their potential. The Leathersellers’ new affiliation with BRNC is an extension of our objectives, as together we strive to set examples of leadership and make a lasting contribution to society and future generations.”
Captain Andy Bray, Commanding Officer said:
“Britannia Royal Naval college is delighted to be affiliated with the Leathersellers. Like the Company, BRNC also has a long history of the pursuit of excellence, and I could think of no better link to make than with this illustrious Company. We look forward to working together to build a strong relationship of cooperation and mutual support.”

The Leathersellers now have four formal modern military affiliations. Along with BRNC other affiliates are:
- 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards, since 2006. This regiment was formed in 1959 by the amalgamation of the 1st King’s Dragoon Guards and the Queen’s Bays (2nd Dragoon Guards), both with long and illustrious histories dating back to 1685.
- HMS Audacious, since 2015. HMS Audacious is the fourth of the Royal Navy’s new generation of Astute Class nuclear-powered attack submarines.
- 230 Squadron RAF, since 2013. This squadron was first formed in 1918 towards the end of the First World War and has served in a number of regions including Germany, Northern Ireland, the Gulf and Iraq. It is the first RAF unit to be adopted by the Leathersellers. The squadron has been temporarily disbanded while a new helicopter is brought into service.
The Leathersellers is a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant – a formal commitment to the fair treatment and respect of those who have served, outlining specific demonstrations of support, including affiliations.
