The Leathersellers’ Foundation becomes first funding partner in People’s Health Trust’s Men’s Health Fund
- The Leathersellers’ Foundation has become the first formal funding partner in the People’s Health Trust’s Men’s Health Fund appeal, with a grant of £140,000.
- The Men’s Health Fund seeks to address the inequalities of men’s health in deprived areas of England, as well as targeting the social and economic pressures that negatively influence the mental health of men and boys at critical moments in life.
- Funding allocated from the Foundation’s annual responsive giving, which tackles defined or emerging needs in society. This has previously included the cost-of-living crisis; grants to help charities reduce their carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency; and through-the-gate practical support for young men leaving prison.
The Leathersellers’ Foundation has become the first formal funding partner of the People’s Health Trust’s Men’s Health Fund.
The £140,000 grant, from the Foundation’s annual responsive giving, will address inequalities in men’s health and support community-led action to improve the health of men and older boys in some of the most deprived areas of England.
This marks a major milestone in the People’s Health Trust’s ambition to raise £1.25 million over two years in support of a national vision for improving men’s health.
The Men’s Health Fund, whilst being distinctly managed, aligns with the Men’s Health Community Fund, a trilateral partnership between the Trust, the Department of Health and Social Care, and Movember.
By joining the appeal, The Leathersellers’ Foundation will help People’s Health Trust tackle the root causes of poor health and create opportunities for men and older boys to access timely, trusted and practical support.
David Barrow, Master (Chair) of the Leathersellers, said: “The evidence is clear: in the UK’s most deprived areas, men and boys are disproportionately affected by poor health and suicide, die younger than those in more advantaged communities, and are less likely to seek support. Utilising annually defined responsive giving, The Leathersellers’ Foundation has joined the People’s Health Trust Men’s Health Fund, backing local charities working to improve the mental health of underserved men and boys. In partnership with the People’s Health Trust, we can extend our reach and impact as a funder, helping to address one of society’s most pressing challenges while supporting more charities than would otherwise be possible. This collective approach will create a legacy of insight, networks and learning that have the potential to strengthen communities for years to come.”
Stacey Lamb, Head of Charity Grants at The Leathersellers’ Foundation, said: “As the first funder to join the People’s Health Trust Men’s Health Fund, we recognise both the scale and urgency of the health inequalities faced by men and boys, and the need for partnership and long-term vision to create lasting social change. Drawing on the People’s Health Trust’s expertise, we can help address the social and economic pressures that negatively influence the mental health of men and boys at critical moments in life, including loneliness and isolation; debt; housing pressures; changes in employment; and the transition to fatherhood. Through the application of annual responsive giving that tackles defined or emerging need, we aim to support trusted local organisations, improve national outcomes, and reduce the administrative burden on charities by channelling applications through a single key fund.”
John Hume, Chief Executive of People’s Health Trust, said: “We are delighted to welcome The Leathersellers’ Foundation as the first formal funding partner in our Men’s Health Fund appeal. Their support is critical in furthering community-led approaches to tackling health inequalities and will help trusted local organisations reach more men and older boys in communities facing the greatest disadvantage. We are now inviting other funders, trusts, foundations, livery companies, corporate partners and philanthropists to join us in this collective effort, helping to build a stronger evidence base, increase the reach of local action and improve health outcomes for men and older boys across England.”
